Finally, Nova and Calvin are free to make their relationship public. This presents a new set of problems, however, which start to become clear when they stop at a local bar for a drink.

    Nova recently published an exposé in the newspaper about the role of the New Orleans criminal justice system—including the police department, for whom Calvin works—in unjustly pressuring African-Americans into plea bargains. The police aren’t happy with Nova, and when she and Calvin bump into one of his brothers in blue, the situation quickly spins out of control.
